What is broadband?
Broadband is a high-speed connection to the Internet that is 'always
on'. It is up to 10 times faster than a 56K modem enabling you to view
web content and download files more quickly. It's called broadband
because it has a much larger capacity to receive (and send) data.

Why consider broadband?
This will depend on what you will be using broadband for. If you are
using it from home or a small office, choosing a service that offers a
speed of 500 kbs is ideal for general surfing and emailing. However, if
you are downloading lots of videos or sending very large files, it may
be better to choose a broadband service with even higher capacity.
What equipment is needed for broadband?
This will depend on who supplies your broadband - but essentially all
you need is a computer that meets the minimum requirements, a suitable
phone line, plus a broadband modem and microfilters (phone adapters) -
which you can add to your broadband order. Depending on what package you
choose, you'll either be able to install everything yourself or have an
engineer come to help you.
What are the costs?
With most broadband packages you'll pay a fixed amount each month, no
matter how often you use it. You should always check this when ordering.
Is extra software required?
As your broadband connection is 'always on', it is a good idea to
install a firewall to protect you from hackers attempting to access the
files on your computer.
You may also choose to buy anti-virus software, this will help protect
you from viruses that travel over the internet and via email.
